Courtney Gleason, MD

Team Physician for the Atlanta Dream

Dr. Courtney Gleason is a non-operative sports medicine physician at Emory University in the Department of Orthopedics. She holds an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame and her medical degree from the University of South Carolina. She completed three years of an orthopedic surgery residency before moving to Atlanta and completing a pediatric residency at Emory. She did a non-operative sports medicine fellowship at Harvard at Boston Children’s Hospital. Before joining the faculty at Emory, she was an attending physician at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and was one of the team physicians for Brown athletics. At Emory, she is the director for Emory’s Female Athlete Program. She is the head team physician for Agnes Scott College and a team physician for the Atlanta Dream. She also serves as a physician for the Atlanta Ballet. While training in Boston she worked as a company physician for the Boston Ballet and in Providence worked with the dancers from Festival Ballet. She enjoys treating athletes of all ages, sports, and skill level. Special interests include working with dancers and aesthetic athletes and runners. She is particularly interested in bone health, bone stress injuries, overuse injuries, and the concept of relative energy deficiency in sport. She has a special interest in understanding female athlete attrition in sports and working with and for female athletes to optimize performance, minimize injury risk, and keep them active and playing the sports they love.

Val Schonberg MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, NCMP, FAND

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

 Val Schonberg is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian with a Master’s degree in Nutrition Science from the University of Minnesota. She is Board Certified as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics, a Certified Menopause Practitioner with the North American Menopause Society and a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Val owns EnlightenU Nutrition Consulting, LLC, a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia where she specializes in nutrition for recreational and professional athletes, dancers and performing artists, women in midlife and menopause, and individuals with disordered eating concerns. Originally from Minnesota, Val’s experience and expertise come from years of practice in many settings including eating disorder treatment, Division 1 college sports medicine, professional dance organizations, and speaking regionally and nationally on numerous nutrition related topics. She is passionate about providing nutrition care to populations vulnerable to disordered eating and promoting positive nutrition messages that help women make informed decisions about their health and live a life where they feel free to confidently embrace their best unique self.

Bryn Chafin, LCSW

Bryn Chafin is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Masters degree in social work from Arizona State University.  She works with women, men, couples, and adolescents struggling with but not limited to anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, frustration in relationships, and identity and life direction.  She works collaboratively with clients to help them reflect on thought processes, emotional states, roles in a system, and ineffective behaviors while providing a safe and secure environment.  She helps clients begin to understand themselves better and find balance in their lives through a mindfulness-based, cognitive behavioral approach.

Bryn is originally from Atlanta, GA, and grew up dancing with the Atlanta Ballet.  She attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where she obtained her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance and her Bachelors of Arts in Creative Writing.  She has pieced together her life experiences from dance, teaching, physical therapy, cultural exposure, social work, advocacy, and search for overall well-being to create a system for her clients.  In her work and with collaborative teams, she tries to treat the whole person: body, mind, spirit, emotion, behaviors, relationships, etc.  Due to her dance background and experience with the mind-body connection, Bryn loves to work with athletes and the unique struggles they face.  

Suzanne Martin, PT, DPT

 Dr. Suzanne Clements Martin, DPT, CLT has an extensive background in the dance world. After receiving a BFA and MA in fine arts dance, she performed, choreographed and taught dance, fitness and Pilates (through Dance Medicine at the Center for Sports Medicine) in the Bay Area. As part of completing her MPT from Samuel Merritt University and DPT from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, she published (JMDS) and received an award for Functional Hip Range of Motion in Elite Female Ballet Dancers. Her 25- year PT career includes Lead PT/ Wellness Program for SF-based Smuin Ballet, nutrition lectures for the School of the San Francisco Ballet, lectures at SFSU (Issues in Dance Medicine and Qualitative Analysis of Movement) and LEAP (Liberal Education for Arts Professionals)- St. Mary’s College. Her backstage work also includes coverage for Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, ODC-SF, Oakland Ballet, visiting artists of the New York City Ballet, Cirque du Soleil and musicals such as Motown, Kinky Boots, Dear Evan Hansen, High School Musical and Book of Mormon. Her private PT clientele included Ballroom competitors as well as the first US students admitted to the Bolshoi Academy in Moscow. She also contributed regular columns to Dance Magazine and Dance Studio life for a decade. She has presented multiple times internationally with PAMA, IADMS, the APTA among other organizations. She is educational director for Pilates Therapeutics through which she presents worldwide on the special population subjects of scoliosis, cancer survivorship, performing arts and foot issues. She maintains a private practice, Total Body Development online and in Marietta, GA.
